Empathizing in a communication context means understanding the emotions and feelings of the speaker from their perspective. This involves actively listening and putting oneself in the speaker's shoes to truly grasp how they feel. When someone empathizes, they connect on a deeper emotional level, which fosters trust and openness in communication. This understanding is crucial in various situations, especially in security contexts where recognizing someone's emotional state can influence how one responds effectively and appropriately.

While offering emotional support is valuable, it is not the full extent of what empathy encompasses. Similarly, giving practical solutions or avoiding personal opinions are important communication skills, but they do not directly relate to the act of empathizing. Empathy is fundamentally about the connection and understanding of the speaker's emotional experience.
